Why Small Groups?

Since the fall, man has attempted to hide from God. This is the default setting in each of us. That desire to hide materializes in our lives as we attempt to keep our lives anonymous. The fewer people who truly know us, the easier and less messy life will tend to be. As I have been reading many pages on the history of the Covenant Church, I have been amazed at the contemporary nature of our denominational forbears.

The Covenant church was birthed in a people who desperately wanted to know Christ in an authentic way and make Him known. They understood that this could only happen in authentic community. “At a mission meeting in Chicago, December 27, 1878, the question was discussed how ‘the Christian could watch over one another and prompt one another to love and good works’. The answers are informative. "It is not enough to gather around God’s word at set times and then as happened in Sweden, go home and not talk to one another. Beloved, let us try to talk to one another privately and not rest until we know each other’s names and personalities. Let us pray together apart as well as publicly. There is so much here that would ensnare our souls…greed, levity, the friendship of the world…” (By One Spirit, Karl A. Olsson)

It’s now 127 years later and Christians still struggle to “talk to one another.” One of the core values of the Covenant church is relationships. Let me encourage you to join a small group whereby you can develop healthy, authentic relationships and support each other in this journey we call the Christian life.
